Ingredients
Method
Prepare Baking Dish:
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter.
Layer Rolls:
- Arrange the sliced Hawaiian rolls in the baking dish, cut side up.
Make Custard:
- In a bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, maple syrup, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and melted butter.
Pour Custard:
- Pour the custard evenly over the rolls, pressing slightly so the bread absorbs the liquid. Let sit 5–10 minutes for better absorption.
Bake:
- Bake uncovered for 35–40 minutes, until the top is golden brown and the custard is set.
Serve:
- Let cool slightly, then drizzle with extra maple syrup, sprinkle powdered sugar, or top with fresh berries. Serve warm.
Notes
Make-ahead: Assemble the night before, cover, and refrigerate. Bake in the morning for an easy breakfast.
For extra richness, sprinkle mini chocolate chips or chopped pecans over the custard before baking.
Day-old Hawaiian rolls absorb the custard better, resulting in a creamier bake.
Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for 2–3 days and reheated in the oven or microwave.
