Equipment

  • 1 Large Pot: For boiling the pasta.
  • 1 Colander: To drain the cooked pasta.
  • 1 Saucepan or Pot: For making the cheese sauce.
  • 1 Whisk: To mix the flour and butter for the roux, and to stir the cheese sauce.
  • 1 Measuring Cups and Spoons For accurately measuring ingredients.
  • 1 Baking Dish (optional): If you choose to bake your macaroni and cheese for a crispy topping.
  • 1 Oven (optional): If baking the macaroni and cheese.

Ingredients

8 ounces elbow macaroni (or pasta of your choice)

2 tablespoons butter

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

2 cups milk

2 cups shredded cheese (such as cheddar, mozzarella, or a combination)

Salt and pepper to taste

Optional toppings: breadcrumbs, chopped parsley, cooked bacon

Instructions

Cook the macaroni according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Once melted, whisk in the flour to form a roux. Cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly, until the mixture is smooth and bubbly.

Gradually pour in the milk, whisking constantly to prevent lumps from forming. Cook the mixture, stirring frequently, until it thickens and begins to bubble.

Reduce the heat to low, then gradually stir in the shredded cheese until it melts and the sauce is smooth and creamy. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Add the cooked macaroni to the cheese sauce, stirring until the pasta is evenly coated.

If desired, transfer the macaroni and cheese to a baking dish and sprinkle with breadcrumbs for a crunchy topping. You can also add cooked bacon or chopped parsley for extra flavor.

Bake the macaroni and cheese in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 20-25 minutes, or until bubbly and golden on top.

Serve the macaroni and cheese hot, straight from the oven, and enjoy the creamy, cheesy goodness!
