Method
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, salt, yeast, and spices.
- In a separate bowl, mix together the warm milk, melted butter, and egg.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough and knead in the dried currants or raisins.
- Divide the dough into 12 equal portions and shape each into a ball.
- Place the balls on a greased baking sheet, leaving space between each bun.
- Cover the buns with a clean kitchen towel and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a small bowl, mix together the flour and water to form a thick paste for the cross.
- Pipe a cross onto the top of each bun using the flour paste.
- Bake the buns in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes, or until golden brown.
- While the buns are baking, heat the apricot preserves or orange marmalade with water in a small saucepan until melted.
- Remove the buns from the oven and brush them with the glaze while still warm.
- Let the buns cool slightly before serving. Enjoy!
