Ingredients
  

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 1/4 cups warm milk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 1 egg
  • 3/4 cup dried currants or raisins

For the Cross:

  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup water

For the Glaze:

  • 1/4 cup apricot preserves or orange marmalade
  • 1 tablespoon water

Instructions
 

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, salt, yeast, and spices.
  • In a separate bowl, mix together the warm milk, melted butter, and egg.
  • Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms.
  • Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  • Punch down the dough and knead in the dried currants or raisins.
  • Divide the dough into 12 equal portions and shape each into a ball.
  • Place the balls on a greased baking sheet, leaving space between each bun.
  • Cover the buns with a clean kitchen towel and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • In a small bowl, mix together the flour and water to form a thick paste for the cross.
  • Pipe a cross onto the top of each bun using the flour paste.
  • Bake the buns in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes, or until golden brown.
  • While the buns are baking, heat the apricot preserves or orange marmalade with water in a small saucepan until melted.
  • Remove the buns from the oven and brush them with the glaze while still warm.
  • Let the buns cool slightly before serving. Enjoy!
