Ingredients
Method
Prepare the Baking Dish
- Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. Add bread cubes and spread evenly.
Make the Custard
- In a bowl, whisk together sweetened condensed milk, whole milk, eggs, melted butter, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until smooth.
- Assemble
- Pour custard evenly over the bread. Press gently so all pieces soak up the mixture.
Chill
- Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or overnight for deeper flavor and creamier texture.
Bake
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Bake uncovered for 40–45 minutes, until puffed, golden, and set in the center.
Serve
- Rest 10 minutes before serving. Dust with powdered sugar or drizzle with warm maple syrup.
Notes
Bread choice matters: Soft, enriched bread gives a custardy interior instead of a dry bake.
Overnight magic: Letting it sit overnight makes the texture extra creamy.
Golden top: For a lightly crisp top, broil for 1–2 minutes at the end.
