Ingredients
  

  • Chocolate Cake Layer
  • 1 box chocolate cake mix plus ingredients to prepare
  • Optional: cocoa powder for dusting
  • Cherry Layer
  • 1 can 21 oz cherry pie filling or 2 cups fresh cherries, pitted and sweetened
  • Whipped Cream Layer
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • ΒΌ cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
Optional Garnish
  • Chocolate shavings or curls
  • Maraschino cherries

Method
 

  1. Bake the Cake
  2. Prepare chocolate cake according to box instructions. Allow to cool completely, then cut into 1-inch cubes.
  3. Whip the Cream
  4. Beat heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla until stiff peaks form.
  5. Assemble the Trifle
  6. In a large trifle bowl or individual glasses, layer a third of the cake cubes.
  7. Top with a layer of cherry pie filling.
  8. Add a layer of whipped cream.
  9. Repeat layers twice more, finishing with whipped cream on top.
  10. Garnish & Chill
  11. Sprinkle with chocolate shavings or curls and top with maraschino cherries. Chill at least 2 hours before serving.

Notes

Make ahead: Can be assembled a day in advance; flavors meld beautifully.
Alcohol option: Brush cake layers lightly with cherry liqueur for an adult version.
Variation: Add a layer of chocolate pudding for extra decadence.
