Method
- Bake the Cake
- Prepare chocolate cake according to box instructions. Allow to cool completely, then cut into 1-inch cubes.
- Whip the Cream
- Beat heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla until stiff peaks form.
- Assemble the Trifle
- In a large trifle bowl or individual glasses, layer a third of the cake cubes.
- Top with a layer of cherry pie filling.
- Add a layer of whipped cream.
- Repeat layers twice more, finishing with whipped cream on top.
- Garnish & Chill
- Sprinkle with chocolate shavings or curls and top with maraschino cherries. Chill at least 2 hours before serving.
Notes
Make ahead: Can be assembled a day in advance; flavors meld beautifully.
Alcohol option: Brush cake layers lightly with cherry liqueur for an adult version.
Variation: Add a layer of chocolate pudding for extra decadence.
