Ingredients
Method
Prep Onions:
- Peel and slice onions into ¼–½ inch thick rings. Separate rings carefully.
Make Batter:
- In a bowl, mix flour, baking powder, salt, and pepper. In another bowl, whisk egg and buttermilk.
Coat Onion Rings:
- Dip each onion ring into the flour mixture first, then into the egg mixture, then back into flour or panko crumbs for extra crunch.
Heat Oil:
- In a deep skillet or Dutch oven, heat vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C).
Fry:
- Fry onion rings in batches for 2–3 minutes per side, or until golden brown. Avoid overcrowding the pan.
Drain & Serve:
- Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Serve hot with ketchup, ranch, or your favorite dipping sauce.
Notes
Use sweet onions for milder flavor and natural sweetness.
Keep fried onion rings warm in a 200°F oven while frying the remaining batches.
For an extra crunch, use panko breadcrumbs instead of flour for the final coating.
Try seasoning the flour or breadcrumbs with smoked paprika or cayenne for a flavor boost.
