Ingredients

  • 🛒 Ingredients
For the Hamburger Steaks:
  • 1 lb ground beef 80/20 for best flavor
  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil for frying
For the Onion Gravy:
  • 2 large onions thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth low sodium preferred
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp dried thyme optional
  • Salt & pepper to taste

Method

Prepare the Patties:
  1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined — don’t overwork. Shape into 4 oval patties.
Cook the Steaks:
  1. Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook patties 4–5 minutes per side until browned. Remove from skillet and set aside (they’ll finish cooking in the gravy).
Caramelize the Onions:
  1. In the same skillet, melt butter. Add sliced onions and cook 10–12 minutes over medium heat, stirring often, until golden and soft.
Make the Gravy:
  1. Sprinkle flour over onions, stir to coat, and cook 1–2 minutes. Gradually whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire until smooth. Add thyme if using. Simmer 3–4 minutes until thickened.
Finish the Dish:
  1. Return patties to the skillet, nestle into the gravy, cover, and simmer 10 minutes until cooked through (internal temp 160°F / 71°C).
Serve:
  1. Plate hamburger steaks smothered with onion gravy. Best served with mashed potatoes or rice to soak up the sauce.

Notes

Meat Options: Swap ground beef for ground turkey or pork if you prefer.
Richer Flavor: Add a splash of red wine or balsamic vinegar to the gravy while simmering.
Thicker Gravy: Simmer uncovered a bit longer to reduce.
Meal Prep: Patties and gravy can be made ahead and reheated — tastes even better the next day.
Serving Suggestion: Pair with green beans, mashed potatoes, or buttered egg noodles for a full comfort meal.
