Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef 80/20 works best
  • 1 medium onion finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 can 15 oz tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef broth or water
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tbsp yellow mustard
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 2 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika or regular paprika
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper optional, for heat
  • Salt & black pepper to taste

Method

Cook the Beef:
  1. In a large skillet or saucepan, cook ground beef and onions over medium heat until browned, about 7–8 minutes. Drain excess grease.
Add Garlic & Seasonings:
  1. Stir in garlic, chili powder, cumin, paprika, cayenne, salt, and pepper. Cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
Build the Sauce:
  1. Add tomato sauce, ketchup, tomato paste, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, and brown sugar. Stir well.
Simmer:
  1. Reduce heat to low and simmer uncovered for 30–40 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened and flavors meld.
Serve:
  1. Spoon over hot dogs in buns and top with shredded cheese, onions, or pickles as desired.

Notes

Texture Preference: For a smoother sauce, pulse cooked beef in a food processor before simmering.
Make Ahead: Sauce tastes even better the next day — perfect for parties.
Storage: Keeps in the fridge up to 4 days or freezes up to 2 months.
Regional Twist: Add a pinch of cinnamon for a hint of sweetness (Detroit-style influence).
Other Uses: Delicious over fries, nachos, or baked potatoes.
