Ingredients
  

  • ¼ cup unsalted butter softened
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp red food coloring
  • ¾ cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp cocoa powder
  • ¼ tsp baking soda
  • Pinch of salt
  • Optional Topping
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar for rolling
  • Powdered sugar or white chocolate drizzle

Method
 

Preheat Oven:
  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a small baking sheet with parchment paper.
Cream Butter & Sugar:
  1. In a bowl, mix butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
Add Wet Ingredients:
  1. Stir in egg yolk, vanilla, and red food coloring until fully combined.
Mix Dry Ingredients:
  1. In a separate bowl, whisk flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
Combine:
  1. Gradually add dry ingredients to wet mixture until a soft dough forms.
Chill Dough:
  1. Chill dough for 15 minutes to prevent spreading.
Shape Cookies:
  1. Roll dough into small balls, roll in sugar if desired, and place on baking sheet.
Bake:
  1. Bake for 10–12 minutes until edges are set and centers are soft.
Cool & Serve:
  1. Let cool for 5 minutes before serving or decorating.

Notes

Soft Centers: Slightly underbake for extra softness.
Extra Valentine Touch: Press a heart sprinkle or chocolate kiss into the center right after baking.
Flavor Boost: Add ¼ tsp vinegar for classic red velvet tang (optional).
